Yesterday, February 7th, the music legend, Quincy Jones, sat down with *The Vulture. Social Media is going crazy over this particular interview. Quincy Jones disclosed "Hollywood secrets" of legendary actors and singers, and gave his honest opinion about where the music industry stands today. He also mentioned his past relationship with Ivanka Trump and his disdained for her father, Donald Trump. Even though his opinion and honesty was surprisingly harsh and entertaining, there were "GEMS" in this interview. People overlooked the good advice.
"I have never in my life made music for money or fame. Not even Thriller... No way... God walks out of the room when you’re thinking about money."
Don't do it for the money and fame. Do it because (it) is your passion. If you do what love, you will not feel like you're working. You will always be happy to work on the next project and complete challenging tasks. If you honestly love what you do, you will go beyond. You'll find yourself not focusing on the money simply because your happiness overrules the dollar.
"You’re supposed to use everything from the past. If you know where you come from, it’s easier to get where you’re going."
Reach out to the people that is already in your industry. Obtain knowledge about those that came before you. It is always great to volunteer, intern, or have a mentor in the field you are pursuing. Learning from the past will not only allow you to be well knowledgable about your craft but also help you grow your network.
"You’ve got to respect the gift God gave you by learning your craft."
Don't take your gift for granted. Seek and gain knowledge about your gift. Knowing more about the gift will help you perfect it and open you up to more opportunities.
If you are in the mist of pursuing your dreams, please take heed of the sound advice Quincy bestowed on the world. Yes, the "shade" and "tea" in this interview is entertaining to say the least, but please take out the time to bypass the gossip and curse words. Really take out the time to read what the man is saying. Good luck on pursing your dreams! Stay focused, consistent and true to yourself.
